History

Steps-2-Success Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization aimed at educating at-risk and underprivileged youth. The organization was founded by its director, Mrs. Gresha Lewis, and currently serves the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Mrs. Lewis has always had a passion for teaching children, which led her to work as an education technician for NASA from 1990-2005. While working for NASA she recognized the lack of educational opportunities available to underachieving, at-risk youth in the Hampton Roads area. There were plenty of educational opportunities available to high achieving and privileged students throughout Hampton Roads, but no programs with the goal of teaching less fortunate students.

An undeniable desire filled Mrs. Lewis to create a program for these children. Armed with numerous educational resources and contacts Mrs. Lewis’ passion culminated in the creation of the non-profit organization Steps-2-Success in 2004. Its goal is to mold young children into respectable and contributing members of their community and the world.

Steps-2-Success teaches underachieving, at-risk, middle and high school youth mathematics, science, technology, leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will help them succeed in all areas of their life, today and in the future. The organization has already helped to make a difference in numerous children’s lives in the Hampton Roads area. It has dreams to grow and expand into more communities and states with the goal of leaving lasting and positive impressions in its wake.

Mission

The mission of Steps-2-Success is to strengthen the socio-economic position of youth residing in the Hampton Roads area and abroad. This will be accomplished by encouraging and supporting spiritual guidance, personal development, education, and leadership training programs through such programs as the Start Something Institutes for Middle and High School Students, and the Young Men of Valor Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy. Additionally, S-2-S will encourage and support in-school neighborhood youth to complete high school, GED programs and post-secondary education.

Goals

In the next five years Steps-2-Success will:

• Provide monthly programs
• Expand into all seven cities in the Hampton Roads Area
• Acquire a physical location to house the programs
• Acquire sponsorships and scholarships from surrounding businesses
• Branch out to both middle and high school students
• Start the Young Men of Valor Entrepreneurial and Leadership Academy and Accelerating-2-Excellence After-School Programs
